Archive Definition

In BDSM, a gimp is a deliberately depersonalized submissive role organized around hooding, enclosure, restraint and assigned object function.

The person entering the role may be straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, queer, fluid or still exploring. Gender and orientation belong to the public object file; neither decides whether the role qualifies.

A rubber or leather suit is one of the most recognizable expressions of the role, but material is a method of enclosure rather than the complete definition. A fully dressed person without depersonalization or function may be wearing a gimp suit. An object under hood, restriction and assigned use is performing the gimp role.

Four Filed Conditions

How the role becomes an object function.

01

Hood and enclosure

The hood removes the ordinary face. Latex, leather, PVC, neoprene or spandex may extend that closure over the body, hands and feet until the silhouette reads as one contained object.

02

Depersonalization

Personal address gives way to an object form: it, thing, toy, object, gimp, unit or instrument. The selected address is not a pronoun set. It is part of the assumed function.

03

Sensory restriction

Sight, speech, hearing, touch, movement and spatial orientation may be reduced through the hood and configuration. The resulting enclosure makes the assigned role more important than ordinary self-presentation.

04

Object function

Service, display, storage, furniture, restraint, endurance, sexual use and other filed functions determine what the enclosed object is available to do within the agreed fantasy frame.

Related Roles

Not every submissive is a gimp.

Submissive

A broad power-exchange position. Submission may exist without enclosure, depersonalization or an object identity.

Gimp

A narrower objectified role in which the hood, enclosure and assigned function deliberately suppress ordinary personhood.

Handler or User

Roles around the configured object. They may direct, store, bring out or use it, but the public file does not turn either role into an ownership label.

Public Object Function Archive

The definition ends where the individual file begins.

Every object records its own material, hood configuration, sensory condition, address and functions. The role is shared. The configuration is not.
